Singapore – Musim Mas Group welcomes the publication of the list of suppliers and mills by Unilever. The Group sees this as a progressive step taken by a key value chain partner of the palm industry in enhancing the traceability of the palm products it uses. This move also demonstrates the commitment of Unilever towards sustainable sourcing.
Concerns on the supply chain by various stakeholders have predominantly been on oil palm growers and processors hitherto.
However, positive changes to the Palm Oil industry require collective and concerted effort by stakeholders along the entire palm value chain.
“A number of major Palm Oil industry players including Musim Mas had, some years ago, made public their supply base in the interest of transparency”, said Carolyn Lim, Corporate Communications Manager, Musim Mas Group. “Unilever has become the first consumer goods conglomerate to join the league. We hope that this will kick start a new industry-wide movement towards supply chain transparency and inspire other companies to follow suit.”
The Palm Oil industry is complex and multi-faceted, especially in the context of FFB supply chain and sustainability requirements. “Traceability is only the beginning of the journey”, said Carolyn. “It is the transformation of the industry, from the Smallholders to the big players, to meet the universally acceptable sustainability standard that ultimately counts.”
