Singapore, 09 September 2020 – Today, Musim Mas releases a new five-year Sustainability Policy (2020-2025). The Policy lays out a renewed and deepened commitment to improving the livelihoods of smallholders, workers, and communities; and deliver positive environmental impact while maintaining a strict stance on No Deforestation, No Peat development, and No Exploitation (NDPE). Above all, Musim Mas aspires to drive innovation in sustainable practices and remain a sustainability leader in the industry.
Musim Mas is a leading sustainable palm oil company, a committed member of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), the Palm Oil Innovation Group (POIG), and the High Carbon Stock Approach (HCSA). The Group recognizes that it can have significant positive impacts by implementing sustainable practices in its operations, as well as by supporting and requiring its suppliers to join its goals.
Since the launch of its previous Sustainability Policy in 2014, Musim Mas has achieved certification under the RSPO standard, as well as verification for compliance with the POIG Charter. The Musim Mas Group has significantly reduced greenhouse gas emissions by installing methane capture facilities and implementing peat management best practices. It has also trained more than 32,000 independent smallholders in sustainable palm oil production through its collaboration with International Finance Corporation (IFC) and its Extension Services Program (ESP).
“As we have progressed in our sustainability journey, so have the expectations from customers, consumers, and civil society organizations for traceable, deforestation-free, and exploitation-free supply chains. The revised Policy takes this into account, incorporates the experience we have gained over the years, and firmly keeps our course on delivering sustainability”, says Mr. Olivier Tichit, the Director of Sustainable Supply Chain, Musim Mas Group.
The new Policy will focus primarily on the suppliers of Musim Mas and aim to strengthen the sustainability of small and mid-sized supplier groups and the smallholders. Outreach programs will be tailored to companies and smallholders while improving the livelihoods of smallholders, workers, and communities. Progress will be tracked through the Supplier NDPE Roadmap and other public platforms. Balancing inclusiveness with rigorous, evidence-based compliance among suppliers will be a significant challenge en-route to a fully traceable, deforestation- and exploitation-free supply base.
Notwithstanding the focus on the supply chain, Musim Mas will continue to improve its sustainability practices, and it will remain an industry leader in innovation, participating in the continuous improvement of robust standards, monitoring systems as well applied research.
The key pillars of the Policy are:
- Improve the lives of smallholders, workers, and communities
- Deliver positive environmental impacts
- Maintain responsible and enduring relationships with suppliers, customers, and stakeholders
- Drive innovation in sustainable practices
Valuing transparency, the Group will continue to report on progress against the goals set by the Sustainability Policy.
