Singapore, 9 October 2020 – On 7 October 2020, the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) launched the second edition of ‘Committed to Sustainable Palm Oil?.’ The report analyzed the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) Annual Communication on Progress (ACOP) reports submitted by RSPO members in 2019.
Musim Mas welcomes this report, which supports transformation in our industry by further improving the transparency of our collective progress.
As a pioneer member of the RSPO, Musim Mas shares the RSPO vision of making sustainable palm oil the norm. Regular and transparent reporting on the progress towards this goal is an integral part of our commitment to the RSPO. We report on our progress as a grower, processor and manufacturer.
With a focus on sustainable and innovative solutions for the industry, Musim Mas wants to set pragmatic and efficient sustainable practices that will inspire others. For example, the Group is the first major to install methane capture facilities for all its mills to reduce carbon emissions. Coupled with biogas generators, this ensures that all its mills are energy positive. Field practices are also brought to the highest possible standards, complying not only with the RSPO P&C but also with the requirements of the Palm Oil Innovation Group. Innovative solutions are designed and deployed to reduce pesticide use, benefiting the environment and our workers.
“The key challenge is to drive uptake of sustainable palm oil, especially among those customers who have yet to join the RSPO, and to obtain recognition by the consumer” says Olivier Tichit, Director of Sustainable Supply Chain, Musim Mas Group. The oil palm supply chain is long, geographically and commercially fragmented, hindering the connection of the “RSPO dots”.
Olivier Tichit added : “As we progressed in our sustainability journey, so have the expectations from customers, consumers, and civil society organizations for traceable, inclusive, deforestation-free, and exploitation-free supply chains. On 09 September 2020, we launched our revised policy. The Policy considers these different expectations, incorporates the experience we have gained over the years, and firmly keeps our course on delivering sustainability.”
