Musim Mas strives to innovate to address the growing demand for palm oil from civil society entities, customers, and consumers, maintain our business in a changing global market, and adapt to dynamic regulatory frameworks. We are continuously finding ways to extend the reach of our sustainability commitments and ensure their meaningful application in our work and the landscapes we operate in.

The Landscape Approach is a holistic and integrated management framework that is gaining momentum through the coordination of sustainable land use objectives in specific subnational areas or landscapes.¹ There is no set formula for a landscape approach, because each landscape has its own characteristics and challenges. Click here to learn more about how we view the landscape approach as an integral part of our strategy. Since our Sustainability Policy was established in 2014 and updated in 2020, we realize that issues such as forest welfare, food security, biodiversity and livelihoods are interrelated. Integrating these themes within the same community or geographic area is the best opportunity to maximize our impact.
From our projects, engagement, and independent diagnostic studies, we learned that:
Many suppliers do not have the capacity to adopt sustainability practices due to limited resources, including conducting traceability exercises or engaging their independent smallholders like how we do via our smallholder programs.
Independent smallholders face limited access to knowledge (e.g., On Good Agricultural Practices) and resources to plant sustainably.
There is uncertainty in land legality, especially around critical areas such as the Aceh-Leuser Ecosystem.
The involvement of the government and local stakeholders is crucial to scaling up projects and preventing a leakage market.
We understand that we cannot act alone to bring about real and meaningful change in the industry. A coordinated response within companies across the industry, sectors, and government levels is needed to achieve tangible and lasting transformation.
This is why we actively participate in multiple multi-stakeholder platforms and develop working partnerships with key stakeholders on landscape and sector-wide levels, to broaden our efforts towards a truly sustainable palm oil supply chain.
